Learn to Snowboard in Tahoe: Beginners

March 13-14, 2010

Learning to snowboard is fun if you have patient instructors and a fun group to learn with (and maybe some pads). We'll provide the patient instructors and the fun group (the pads are up to you!) You'll love learning to ride, and weekends at the OAC ski house are always fun!

snowboarding lessonsYou'll learn all of the basics:

  • getting on and off the lift
  • how a snowboard works
  • how to control the board
  • how to turn
  • how to stop
  • then carve it up on the slopes

But learning to snowboard with the OAC is more than just great lessons on the snow. We'll be shooting video as you learn so you can see your progress and analyze your technique back at the cabin.

In addition, you'll get a weekend full of information, including how to shop for a snowboard, bindings and boots, how to wax a board when you own one, and tips on dressing for the elements.

And you'll learn it all in the great Outdoor Adventure Club environment with a low student-to-instructor ratio. This class is limited to only 4 students, so you'll receive great personal attention throughout the weekend. Most resort clinics have 10 students per instructor, and offer beginning lessons that last just 2 hours. It is very difficult to learn snowboarding in 2 hours! OAC has a 4-to-1 ratio, and you get hands-on instructions for 2 full days in this clinic, not just 2 hours!

This season we have a ski house in North Tahoe to call our home for the winter. It is a traditional 4 bedroom ski house in the Tahoe-Donner subdivision North of Truckee. This, and the North Shore resorts, will be the base camp for our Learn to Snowboard weekend.

Trip logistics:

Friday night:

Meet at the cabin in Truckee on Friday night. We'll have snowboard videos available to view and to get you psyched for your weekend.

Saturday:
Awake for an early breakfast at the cabin. We'll head to one of the resorts, where you will spend the rest of the day learning balance, how to carve, and most importantly, how to ride and stop. You'll receive lots of individual attention, tips and pointers. You'll have your snowboard instructor at your disposal for the whole weekend!

After boarding, everyone will meet up for some apres skiing , then head back to the cabin for dinner and video feedback from your day. If you like, there is a neighborhood Jacuzzi you can use. The cost is $8. So bring cash and a swimsuit!

learning to snowboardSunday:
You'll awake to another hearty hot breakfast and get ready for another day on the slopes. Today, everyone will receive more instruction and tips on riding technique. By the end of the day on Sunday you should not only be able to make great turns on both edges, but you'll have a great understanding of how the snowboard works, and what to do to progress.

Includes:

  • Cabin lodging for Friday and Saturday nights (shared rooms)
  • Two lift tickets to North shore resorts (tbd based on best snow conditions)
  • 2 days of expert, proven instruction
  • Video feedback on the slopes and back in the cabin
  • Meals for Saturday breakfast, dinner, Sunday breakfast

What to bring:

A complete gear list will come with your confirmed reservation, but you should be prepared with the following:

  • Snowboard, boots and bindings (to make he most of your time at Tahoe, it's best to rent at home and bring the board with you as it avoids delays at the resorts)
  • Snow pants are a must for snowboarding. You may want to wear thick fleece under them to provide cushion
  • Warm snow jacket
  • Dress in layers (avoid cotton!) as you may work up a sweat
  • Protective gear will help avoid injury, and allow you to focus on learning (helmet, wrist guards, padded shorts)
  • Waterproof gloves or mittens
  • Goggles, scarf, hat, sunscreen, lip balm
  • Personal toiletries for the cabin and wine to share by the fire, or a beer or other libation
